Daido Moriyama

Published by Akaaka in 2013, this volume serves as a comprehensive retrospective on the work of Daidō Moriyama, one of Japan’s most influential photographers. Emerging from the post-war Provoke movement, Moriyama’s aesthetic is defined by his signature 'are-bure-boke' style—grainy, blurry, and out-of-focus imagery. This book was produced to archive his raw, visceral documentation of urban decay and the shifting cultural identity of Japan during the latter half of the twentieth century.

The book’s design prioritizes a high-contrast, immersive visual experience that reflects Moriyama’s philosophy of capturing the ephemeral nature of city streets. By compiling a diverse selection of his street photography, the collection aims to provide a definitive look at his artistic evolution. Upon its release, the publication was received as a significant contribution to contemporary photography, solidifying Moriyama’s reputation among international critics for his ability to transform mundane scenes into stark, existential snapshots.
