Where it came from
Published by Karma in 2008, this monograph serves as a comprehensive survey of Dan Colen’s early career, capturing the raw and provocative spirit of the New York downtown art scene during the mid-2000s. The book documents Colen’s transition from intricate hyper-realistic paintings to his large-scale, often irreverent installations, reflecting the post-pop sensibilities that defined his practice during this formative period.
The volume was curated to highlight the thematic depth of Colen’s work, which frequently engages with American subcultures, themes of mortality, and the aesthetic of decay. Designed as a visual archive, the book captures the technical evolution of an artist who rose to prominence through his association with the 'Bowery School' group of artists, offering readers an intimate look at works that challenged traditional notions of fine art and material longevity.
