Daniel Richter, Hirn. Ausstellung 9. Mai - 22. Juni 2003, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein

This monograph was published in conjunction with Daniel Richter’s 2003 solo exhibition titled Hirn, held at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein. During this period, Richter was undergoing a significant stylistic transition, moving away from the abstract, psychedelic patterns of his earlier work toward the figurative, expressive, and often politically charged oil paintings that would come to define his international reputation.

The publication serves as a primary record of Richter’s aesthetic pivot, capturing his interest in dense, layered compositions that draw from historical events, punk culture, and media imagery. It was produced by Hatje Cantz, a house known for its rigorous documentation of contemporary art, and features critical essays that situates Richter’s work within the wider landscape of post-reunification German painting, reflecting the intensity and visceral color palettes that drew acclaim from critics at the time.
