Das Geschichtsverständnis des Markus - Evangeliums

James M. Robinson published this scholarly work, titled 'Das Geschichtsverständnis des Markus-Evangeliums', in 1956 through Zwingli-Verlag. This monograph emerged during a critical period in mid-century biblical studies, contributing to the burgeoning conversation surrounding the 'New Quest' for the historical Jesus. Robinson focused his analysis on the theological interpretation of history within the Gospel of Mark, seeking to move beyond earlier liberal life-of-Jesus research while grappling with the existentialist implications brought forth by Rudolf Bultmann and his students.

The design and intellectual structure of the work reflect the rigorous academic standards of post-war German theology. As an American scholar writing in German, Robinson aimed to bridge the gap between European critical methodology and the broader international academic community. The text was well-received within specialized theological circles, serving as a seminal piece that helped define the 'Redaktionsgeschichte' (redaction criticism) school, which prioritized the evangelist as an active theologian rather than merely a compiler of tradition.
