Das Johannesevangelium

Published in 1867 by C. Bertelsmann, this volume is a German-language edition of the theological commentary on the Gospel of John by the Dutch Reformed theologian Johannes Jacobus van Oosterzee. During the mid-19th century, Oosterzee was a highly regarded figure in European biblical scholarship, known for his work in defending orthodox Christian theology against the burgeoning rationalist critical movements of the era. The C. Bertelsmann firm, based in Gütersloh, served as a prominent conduit for distributing such scholarly religious texts to a German-speaking audience interested in reconciling academic rigor with traditional faith.

The design of this edition reflects the functional, academic aesthetic characteristic of 19th-century theological publishing. It was intended primarily for use by clergy, students of divinity, and well-read laypeople who required a comprehensive exegetical resource. While it did not feature the elaborate illustrations found in luxury gift editions of the period, the typography and binding were crafted to signal professional legitimacy and durability. The work was well received in academic circles of the time for its accessible yet deeply researched approach, maintaining its status as a standard reference in its specific ecclesiastical niche for several decades.
