Where it came from
Published in 2000 by Wise Publications, this songbook serves as an official collection of sheet music for the British singer-songwriter David Gray. Released during the height of the commercial success of his breakthrough album, White Ladder, the book was designed to provide fans and musicians with accurate piano, vocal, and guitar arrangements for his most popular tracks from that era. It reflects a period when Gray transitioned from a struggling independent artist to a chart-topping figure in the UK and beyond.
The publication follows the standard format for contemporary music songbooks of the late 1990s and early 2000s, utilizing clear notation and chord diagrams to replicate the folk-electronic aesthetic of Gray's studio recordings. Wise Publications, a leader in music education materials, aimed to capture the specific melodic sensibility that defined Gray's work at the turn of the millennium. It was received as a practical resource for enthusiasts of his songcraft, particularly those looking to interpret the introspective and rhythmic nature of his acoustic-driven compositions.
