Where it came from
Published in 1977 by Kluwer Technische Boeken, this scholarly work focuses on the neo-Gothic sculpture collection housed within the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. It was produced during a period of renewed academic interest in the 19th-century ecclesiastical art and architectural revivals of the Low Countries, serving as a specialized survey for art historians and researchers interested in the religious heritage of the city.
The author, Christine van Gerwen, undertook this study to document and contextualize the sculptural additions made to the cathedral during the neo-Gothic movement. The book aims to provide a formal analysis of these works against the backdrop of the cathedral's long history, offering insight into the stylistic evolution and the theological functions these sculptures served within a site that is primarily known for its older Gothic and Baroque masterworks.
