Where it came from
Ursula Schulz-Dornburg produced this photographic project during her 1980 expedition along the Tigris river in Iraq. Commissioned in part by the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover, the work captures the intersection of ancient Mesopotamian history and the burgeoning industrialization of the region, documenting both archeological sites and modern architectural intrusions.
Schulz-Dornburg is known for her detached, systematic approach to landscape photography, often focusing on the structures of human civilization and the passage of time. The publication serves as a visual record of a landscape that has since been irrevocably altered by conflict and development, reflecting the artist's interest in the tension between historical preservation and the relentless forward march of infrastructure.
