Dessins de Pierre-Paul Rubens

Published in 1939 by Éditions de la Connaissance, this catalog accompanied a major exhibition of Pierre-Paul Rubens' drawings held at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. The publication was designed to provide scholars and art enthusiasts with a comprehensive look at the master's graphic technique, serving as a significant scholarly reference during a period when the study of Rubens' preparatory work was undergoing renewed academic scrutiny.

The volume captures the essence of the Rubensian aesthetic, emphasizing the fluidity and structural precision characteristic of his sketches. The editorial team at the Palais des Beaux-Arts curated these reproductions to highlight the intimate relationship between Rubens' rapid pen and chalk strokes and his final monumental canvases. While the publication was overshadowed by the onset of the Second World War shortly after its release, it remains a respected document within the history of art historiography for its high-quality plates and contextual framing of the Flemish Baroque period.
