Die klassische Altertumswissenschaft an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena

Published in 2011 by Franz Steiner Verlag, this scholarly volume provides a comprehensive historical survey of the development of classical studies at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. The book emerged as part of an academic initiative to document the intellectual history of one of Germany's oldest universities, specifically focusing on the evolution of Altertumswissenschaft—the multifaceted study of classical antiquity—within the context of the institution's changing political and pedagogical environment over several centuries.

The work was curated and edited by Meinolf Vielberg, a professor specializing in classical philology, who sought to synthesize the archival records and biographical sketches of the scholars who shaped the department. The design and presentation reflect the traditional academic standards of Franz Steiner Verlag, a publisher long respected for its rigorous contributions to historical and humanistic research. The book was received as an essential reference for historians of science and those tracking the institutional trajectory of German classical education.
