Where it came from
Published in 1966, this academic monograph by Heinz-Jürgen Kliewer serves as a specialized study on the evolution of medieval chess allegory, specifically tracing the influence of the Italian Dominican friar Jacobus de Cessolis. The work explores the transition of the 'Schachzabelbuch' tradition into German literature, situating chess not merely as a game but as a complex moral and social metaphor that defined medieval political philosophy.
The text investigates how the allegorical interpretations of chess pieces—representing various tiers of feudal society—were adapted and interpreted by German authors following the dissemination of De Cessolis's original manuscript, 'Liber de moribus hominum et officiis nobilium ac popularium super ludo scachorum.' It remains a niche scholarly resource, reflecting the mid-twentieth-century trend in German philology to map the intersection between vernacular literature and medieval didactic texts.
