Ed van der Elsken

This retrospective volume serves as a definitive survey of Ed van der Elsken, the Dutch photographer and filmmaker celebrated for his intimate, gritty documentation of mid-century urban subcultures. Emerging from his seminal work in post-war Paris and later travels across Japan and Africa, the collection highlights his distinctive approach to photojournalism, which prioritized spontaneous, raw interaction over objective distance. His practice was heavily influenced by the 'subjective photography' movement, reflecting his own restless spirit and deeply personal relationships with his subjects.

The design of this 2005 publication reflects the meticulous curation typical of NAi Uitgevers, aiming to preserve the narrative urgency inherent in Van der Elsken’s original layouts. By juxtaposing his cinematic contact sheets with his iconic published sequences, the book captures the restless, voyeuristic, and empathetic energy that defined his career. Upon its release, it was widely praised for providing necessary historical context to his legacy, reinforcing his status as one of the most significant European street photographers of the twentieth century.
