Education of Henry Adams

The Education of Henry Adams was originally written for private circulation in 1907. Henry Adams, a descendant of two U.S. presidents, intended the work as a reflection on the rapid modernization of the world and his own perceived failure to adapt to the new century. By examining his life through a detached, third-person perspective, he produced a profound critique of American education and societal values during the Gilded Age.

Following Adams' death in 1918, the Massachusetts Historical Society published the work publicly, where it quickly achieved critical acclaim. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography in 1919 and has since remained a cornerstone of American intellectual history. The specific edition identified, published via CreateSpace, represents the ongoing accessibility of this classic text to modern readers seeking to understand Adams' philosophical inquiry into the disconnect between traditional upbringing and the realities of the twentieth century.
