Where it came from
Published in 1980 by Knopf, this single-volume compilation brought together several of Elizabeth David's most influential works, including Mediterranean Food, French Country Cooking, and Summer Cooking. These texts were originally released between 1950 and 1955, a period when post-war British cooking was notoriously austere. David's writing served to demystify foreign cuisines for an English-speaking audience, emphasizing the quality of ingredients and the simplicity of traditional methods over complex culinary artifice.
The design of this edition reflects the era's approach to authoritative culinary literature, favoring a substantial, utilitarian format that prioritizes the text's enduring instructional value. Elizabeth David, often credited with revolutionizing British domestic cooking, approached her subject matter with a blend of cultural history and precise observation. Her work was met with significant acclaim, eventually establishing her as one of the most respected food writers of the twentieth century and an essential authority for generations of professional chefs and home cooks alike.
