Where it came from
Engelbert Kaempfer, a German physician and naturalist, documented his 1690 visit to the Kingdom of Ayutthaya while serving the Dutch East India Company. These records were later integrated into his broader work, 'The History of Japan,' and serve as one of the most vital Western accounts of seventeenth-century Siamese court life, topography, and social customs during the reign of King Phetracha.
This 2003 edition, published by Iudicium, presents Kaempfer’s observations with modern scholarly rigor. The volume was produced to provide researchers and historians with a clean, accessible rendering of the original manuscript, preserving the intellectual tradition of early modern travel literature while contextualizing the European perspective of Southeast Asia during a period of expanding trade and diplomatic friction.
