Where it came from
Published in 2021, this self-titled work serves as a retrospective catalog of the career and creative philosophy of Eric Zimmerman, a prominent figure in the field of game design and theory. The book arrives as a synthesis of his long-standing work in both academic environments, such as the NYU Game Center, and his commercial output, which includes influential titles like 'The Game Design Workshop' and various experimental games developed alongside his collaborators.
The publication is designed to function as both a portfolio and a scholarly resource, documenting the evolution of Zimmerman's approach to play and interactive systems. Its reception is primarily grounded in the gaming and design education communities, where it is utilized as a reference for understanding the iterative processes and conceptual frameworks behind modern game development. The visual presentation aims to reflect the minimalist and systems-oriented aesthetic that characterizes much of Zimmerman's own professional output.
