Eschatologie und Jenseitserwartung im hellenistischen Diasporajudentum

Eschatologie und Jenseitserwartung im hellenistischen Diasporajudentum, published by de Gruyter in 1978, emerged as a significant contribution to the academic study of Second Temple Judaism. Written by Ulrich Fischer, the volume explores the evolution of eschatological thought and concepts of the afterlife as they were influenced by the cross-pollination of Hellenistic philosophy and traditional Jewish faith during the diaspora period. It was conceived as part of the rigorous scholarly output typical of the WUNT (Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament) series, which aims to provide deep, text-critical insights into the intellectual milieu that preceded and surrounded the rise of early Christianity.

The design and production of this work reflect the traditional standards of de Gruyter, a publishing house renowned for its commitment to high-level theology and classical studies. Fischer approached his subject with a focus on historical-critical methodology, meticulously documenting how Diaspora communities reconciled their ancestral beliefs with the prevailing intellectual climate of the Mediterranean world. Upon its release, the text was received by the academic community as a dense, specialized study, valued primarily by historians and theologians for its comprehensive analysis of source materials and its balanced treatment of complex, often fragmented, ancient religious texts.
