Exhibition of paintings by Ignacio Zuloaga

This exhibition catalog was produced in 1916 to accompany a major retrospective of the Spanish painter Ignacio Zuloaga, which toured several American cities including New York, Boston, and Buffalo. Christian Brinton, a prominent art critic and curator known for introducing European modernism to American audiences, authored the text, which sought to frame Zuloaga’s dark, atmospheric depictions of Spanish peasant life and high society as a vital link between traditional realism and early 20th-century expressionism.

The publication was designed by the Redfield-Kendrick-Odell Co., a firm known for high-quality commercial printing in the early 20th century. Brinton aimed to provide a scholarly context for Zuloaga’s work, which had gained significant international acclaim for its dramatic lighting and somber, earthy palette. The catalog was well-received by the art establishment of the era as a sophisticated companion to what was then considered one of the most important foreign art exhibitions to visit the United States during the First World War.
