Fell Beasts and Fair: A Noblebright Fantasy Anthology

Fell Beasts and Fair, an anthology edited by Leslie J. Anderson and published by Spring Song Press in 2018, was conceived as a response to the prevalent trend of dark, cynical, and grimdark fantasy. By highlighting the 'noblebright' subgenre, the collection aims to showcase stories where moral complexity exists alongside themes of hope, heroism, and the potential for positive change, directly challenging the notion that grit and suffering are the only markers of literary maturity.

The anthology draws together a selection of short fiction from various contributors, curated to reflect Anderson’s editorial vision of resilient characters facing profound darkness with light and courage. As a niche publication within the independent press scene, the work was designed to provide a cohesive aesthetic experience for readers seeking fantasy that leans toward optimistic idealism. It was received by readers of the subgenre as a meaningful attempt to formalize and celebrate the noblebright movement, offering a curated alternative to the more nihilistic narratives dominating the mainstream fantasy market at the time.
