Where it came from
Published in 2006 by Witte de With, this monograph serves as a comprehensive catalog of the cinematic installations produced by Danish artist Jesper Just. Released during a period of significant international recognition for his work, the book documents his transition from focused short film projects to more complex, site-specific installations that challenge traditional narrative structures. It was designed to provide a cohesive archival record for a body of work characterized by its exploration of emotional vulnerability, gender performance, and the aesthetics of classic Hollywood cinema.
The publication functions as both a visual reference and a critical companion to Just's oeuvre, featuring contributions that contextualize his highly stylized, moody visual language. The design emphasizes the tactile nature of his filmic output, utilizing a layout that reflects the cinematic pacing inherent in his video installations. Upon its release, the volume was well-received within the contemporary art community for its high-quality production and for effectively capturing the atmospheric tension that defines Just's artistic practice.
