Flynn of the inland

Flynn of the Inland was written by Australian author Ion L. Idriess and first published in 1932 by Angus and Robertson. The work is a biographical account of the Reverend John Flynn, the founder of the Australian Inland Mission and the pioneer behind the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Idriess, a prolific chronicler of the Australian outback, sought to immortalize the humanitarian efforts and logistical ingenuity that brought medical care to remote settlers living in the vast, isolated interior of the continent.

The book is widely regarded as a seminal piece of Australian bush literature, reflecting the national sentiment of the era that championed rugged individualism and the taming of the frontier. Idriess crafted the narrative with a documentary-style urgency, aiming to capture the grit of the Australian landscape while highlighting the administrative and medical triumphs of the Presbyterian Church’s mission. Upon its release, it became a significant success, helping to elevate Flynn’s public profile and ensuring the survival and expansion of his mission services through increased charitable awareness.
