Where it came from
This commemorative volume was published in 2004 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Arya Dewaker, a prominent socio-cultural and religious organization in Paramaribo, Suriname. The society serves as a central pillar for the Surinamese Hindu community, tracing its origins to the arrival of indentured laborers from India in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book functions as a historical chronicle of the association’s efforts to preserve Vedic traditions, promote education, and foster community cohesion within the unique multicultural landscape of Suriname.
The design and content of the book reflect a documentary intent, compiling organizational milestones, leadership histories, and the evolution of the society's outreach programs over seven and a half decades. It is written from an internal perspective, serving as both a record for its members and a testament to the influence of the Arya Samaj movement in the Caribbean. As an institutional publication, it is highly specialized, documenting the intersection of cultural identity and religious practice for the diaspora community.
