Where it came from
Published in 1979 by the IVAM Centre Julio González, this catalog accompanied one of the earliest major institutional retrospectives dedicated to the work of Gordon Matta-Clark. Following his untimely death in 1978, the publication served as a vital effort to archive his ephemeral 'anarchitecture' and site-specific interventions, which often involved cutting through abandoned buildings to reveal their structural anatomy.
The book functions as a seminal reference for the artist’s process, documenting his radical approach to sculpture and urban space. It features photographic evidence and sketches that capture the tension between destruction and creation inherent in his practice. At the time of its release, the volume was instrumental in establishing Matta-Clark’s legacy within the canon of post-minimalist and conceptual art, offering a permanent record of projects that were otherwise intended to disappear.
