Guadalcanal : the carrier battles : carrier operations in the Solomons, August-October 1942

Published in 1987, this work by Eric M. Hammel serves as a meticulous operational history focusing on the pivotal naval engagements around Guadalcanal during the second half of 1942. It emerged during a period of heightened interest in Pacific theater historiography, aiming to provide a granular, day-by-day account of carrier doctrine and tactical execution in the Solomons campaign.

Hammel, a prolific author known for his emphasis on first-person accounts and tactical detail, designed this volume to bridge the gap between broader strategic surveys and specific unit logs. The book is widely regarded by military historians for its reliance on oral histories and detailed flight deck narratives, offering a grounded, ground-level perspective on the exhaustion and complexity of carrier warfare during the transition from early war improvisations to more mature naval aviation tactics.
