Hamas and civil society in Gaza

Published by Princeton University Press in 2011, this scholarly work by Sara Roy serves as a rigorous examination of the socio-political dynamics in the Gaza Strip. Roy, a senior research scholar at Harvard University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies, drew upon decades of field research and academic inquiry to analyze how Islamist institutions operated alongside and within the broader context of Palestinian civil society following the 2006 legislative elections and the subsequent blockade.

The book is noted for its nuanced approach to understanding how Hamas navigated the dual roles of governance and social service provision amidst intense political and economic pressure. By shifting the focus from purely security-centric narratives to the internal developmental and social complexities of Gaza, Roy sought to provide a grounded, empirical perspective on regional stability and humanitarian conditions. The work has been widely recognized in academic circles for its meticulous documentation and its critique of the exclusionary policies that shaped the political landscape of the territory.
