Where it came from
Published in 2002 by De Verbeelding, this collection represents the meticulous work of Dutch photographer Hans Van Der Meer. The book captures the peripheral and often mundane nature of amateur football matches across Europe, focusing on the expansive landscapes surrounding the pitches rather than the traditional action-oriented photography typically associated with the sport.
Van Der Meer’s design approach is characterized by a detached, observational aesthetic that emphasizes the incongruity of small-scale sporting events within vast, often dreary or scenic environments. The work has been praised by critics for its sociological depth and its ability to elevate local, overlooked recreational spaces into subjects of formal artistic inquiry, establishing Van Der Meer as a significant figure in contemporary documentary photography.
