Harold's Fairy Tale

Harold's Fairy Tale was written and illustrated by Crockett Johnson and originally published in 1956 as part of the beloved Harold series. The book follows Harold, a young boy who uses his purple crayon to draw his own reality, as he embarks on a quest to find a castle that appears in his dreams. This installment captures the minimalist aesthetic that defined the series, using simple line drawings against stark white backgrounds to emphasize the power of a child's imagination and agency.

Johnson, a former political cartoonist, utilized a deceptive simplicity in his work that resonated deeply with mid-century readers. By stripping away background details, he kept the narrative focus entirely on the act of creation itself. The series is widely considered a foundational work of twentieth-century children's literature, praised for its directness and its philosophical undertone regarding the way we construct our own experiences of the world.
