Helmut Middendorf, Bernd Zimmer

Published in 1982 by Buchmann, this volume documents the work of Helmut Middendorf and Bernd Zimmer, two central figures of the Neue Wilde movement in West Berlin. Emerging during the late 1970s and early 1980s, the movement sought to move away from the conceptual and minimalist rigor of the previous decade, favoring instead a return to expressive, figurative painting characterized by raw energy, thick brushwork, and a vibrant, often aggressive color palette.

The publication captures a pivotal moment for the Galerie am Moritzplatz circle, where artists sought to re-establish painting as a direct, visceral medium. The design reflects the aesthetic of the period, prioritizing large-scale reproductions of the artists' canvases to emphasize their focus on subjective experience and urban existentialism. It was received as a significant record of the German neo-expressionist shift, providing insight into how these artists translated the frantic atmosphere of a divided Berlin into a new visual language.
