Hendrik Willem Mesdag 1831-1915

Published in 1988 by the Stichting Mesdag Documentatie, this comprehensive monograph was compiled by Johan Poort to serve as a definitive scholarly reference on the life and oeuvre of the Dutch maritime painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag. The book emerged as a significant effort to preserve and categorize the works of the artist, who is most famously known for the Panorama Mesdag in The Hague, a monumental cylindrical painting that remains one of the world's oldest panoramic works still in its original location.

The publication reflects the meticulous archival approach characteristic of the foundation's mission to document Mesdag's legacy within the context of the Hague School of art. Johan Poort provides an analytical perspective on Mesdag's transition from a business career to professional painting, detailing his stylistic evolution and his profound influence on late 19th-century realism. The work is widely regarded in academic circles as a foundational text for understanding the technical execution and historical placement of Mesdag’s seascapes and his significant personal art collection.
