Heroes of the plains, or Lives and wonderful adventures of Wild Bill, Buffalo Bill, Kit Carson, Capt. Payne, Capt. Jack, Texas Jack, California Joe, and others ..

Published in 1881 by A.L. Bancroft & Co., this volume was a quintessential example of late 19th-century dime novel literature and frontier hagiography. Written by James W. Buel, the work served as a compilation of sensationalized biographies detailing the lives of iconic figures of the American West. It was produced during a period of immense public fascination with the frontier, capitalizing on the transition of historical scouts and guides into national folk heroes.

Buel’s narrative style was designed to satisfy a reading public hungry for rugged adventure, emphasizing the mythic qualities of men like Buffalo Bill Cody and Kit Carson. The design often featured dramatic, woodcut illustrations that reinforced the trope of the valiant frontiersman taming an untamed landscape. While the text frequently blurred the lines between historical fact and tall-tale hyperbole, it was received as a standard reference for Western folklore, helping to cement the romanticized image of the American West that persisted well into the twentieth century.
