Provenance

Where it came from

Published by GRIN Verlag in 2007, this academic study by Axel Lambrette serves as an analytical examination of the work of Hilla and Bernd Becher. The Bechers were pioneering German conceptual photographers known for their rigorous, typological documentation of industrial architecture. Their collaborative practice, centered around the Düsseldorf Art Academy, exerted a profound influence on late 20th-century photography and helped establish the 'Düsseldorf School' of photography.

Lambrette’s text contextualizes the Bechers' specific methodological approach, focusing on how their systematic repetition of industrial subjects—such as water towers and blast furnaces—shifted photography toward a sculptural and taxonomic discipline. While the work functions as a focused research paper on their aesthetic philosophy and historical significance, it is reflective of the ongoing academic discourse that continues to treat the Bechers' vast archive as a seminal contribution to contemporary art history.
