Historic garden week in Virginia

Historic Garden Week in Virginia, first organized by the Garden Club of Virginia in 1929, originated as a vital fundraising initiative to restore the grounds of historic sites across the Commonwealth. By the time this 1949 edition was published, the annual event had already become a well-established cultural institution, designed to encourage tourism and provide the necessary capital for the ongoing preservation of Virginia's colonial gardens. The guidebooks served as essential travel companions, meticulously detailing the private estates and public landscapes opened to the public for the occasion.

The 1949 edition follows the established tradition of these guides, combining practical itineraries with brief historical sketches and botanical observations. The design and editorial work were spearheaded by the Garden Club of Virginia’s committees, which prioritized clarity and accessibility for the touring public. These publications were widely regarded as authoritative resources for mid-century landscape architecture enthusiasts, reflecting the organization's commitment to maintaining historical integrity while promoting the aesthetic legacy of the state's most significant green spaces.
