HR Giger

Published in 2002 by Taschen, this monograph serves as a comprehensive visual survey of the work of Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger. The book was developed under the editorial guidance of Sonja Altmeppen, who curated a selection of Giger's biomechanical art, ranging from his early airbrushed paintings to his foundational contributions to the design of the Alien creature for cinema. It belongs to Taschen's signature series of oversized art books, which are intended to provide high-quality, large-format reproductions of influential artists' oeuvres for a general audience.

The volume captures the late 20th-century preoccupation with the intersection of the organic and the mechanical, a hallmark of Giger's aesthetic. By documenting his sketches, sculptural models, and dark, dreamlike canvases, the book contextualizes Giger not merely as a science fiction designer, but as a master of fantastic realism. Upon its release, the book was well-received by fans of speculative art and cinema history, serving as an accessible reference point for those seeking to understand the technical intricacy and thematic depth of the artist's legacy.
