Intelligenzprüfungen an Menschenaffen

Wolfgang Köhler's Intelligenzprüfungen an Menschenaffen, first published in 1917, emerged from his pioneering research at the Anthropoid Station on Tenerife. During the First World War, Köhler remained on the island, where he conducted a series of classic experiments with chimpanzees to study their problem-solving abilities and cognitive processes. This work was fundamental to the development of Gestalt psychology, as it challenged prevailing behaviorist views by demonstrating that primates utilized insight and perceptual restructuring rather than simple trial-and-error learning.

The 1925 English edition, published by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner as The Mentality of Apes, brought Köhler's findings to a broad international audience. The design and presentation of the text were intended to bridge the gap between rigorous scientific observation and philosophical inquiry. The book was received as a landmark contribution to comparative psychology, effectively shifting the discourse on animal intelligence and influencing generations of researchers in fields ranging from cognitive science to ethology.
