Where it came from
Matthias Konradt’s 'Israel, Church, and the Gentiles in the Gospel of Matthew' was published in 2014 as part of the Baylor-Mohr Siebeck Studies in Early Christianity series. The work represents a significant academic effort to synthesize complex scholarly debates regarding the ecclesiology of the First Gospel, specifically addressing the tension between the Jewish origins of the Matthean community and its eventual universalist mission toward the Gentiles.
The book is an English translation and revision of Konradt’s earlier German research, designed for an audience of New Testament scholars and advanced theology students. Konradt argues that the Gospel maintains a persistent focus on Israel's importance even as the mission expands, a thesis that challenged prevailing academic consensus at the time. It has been widely received in theological circles as a rigorous, nuanced contribution to Matthean studies, noted for its disciplined exegesis and thorough engagement with historical-critical methodology.
