Jack Johnson in the ring and out

Jack Johnson in the Ring and Out was first published in 1927, offering a candid and often defiant autobiographical account of the life of Jack Johnson, the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion. Written during a period when Johnson remained a controversial and polarizing figure in American society, the book served as his opportunity to reclaim his narrative from the sensationalized press reports that defined much of his career and public image.

The memoir provides a detailed perspective on the racial tensions of the early 20th century, covering Johnson's rise to the championship, his legal troubles, and his experiences of exile. By documenting his own life, Johnson challenged the prevailing sports journalism of the era, which frequently disparaged his character. While initially received with skepticism by mainstream critics, the work has since been recognized as an essential primary source for understanding the intersection of race, athletics, and American culture in the Jim Crow era.
