Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet

Published in 1994 by Childrens Press, this biography of Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet was created as part of the Cornerstones of Freedom series. This collection was designed to provide elementary and middle school students with accessible, informative accounts of significant figures and events in American history. The series was a staple in many school and public libraries throughout the late 20th century, characterized by its straightforward narrative style and inclusion of historical illustrations to support educational curricula.

Zachary Kent authored this installment during a period when the publisher was focused on expanding its biographical offerings for younger readers. The book explores the 1673 expedition of the French-Canadian explorer Louis Jolliet and the Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette, who were the first Europeans to map the northern portion of the Mississippi River. The design emphasizes clarity, utilizing the standard format of the series to condense complex colonial exploration into a concise volume suitable for foundational learning.
