Jamilti and Other Stories

Jamilti and Other Stories was published in 2008 as a collection of short comics by the acclaimed Israeli illustrator and cartoonist Rutu Modan. The book serves as a retrospective of her shorter narrative works, many of which were originally serialized in various periodicals and anthologies before being compiled for an international audience. These stories reflect Modan's signature blend of clear-line illustration and deeply human, often unsettling, psychological storytelling.

Modan, a co-founder of the Israeli comics collective Actus Tragicus, is widely regarded for her ability to navigate complex themes of Middle Eastern politics and personal relationships with a subtle, observant eye. Her design approach in this collection emphasizes clean, expressive character work that draws from the Belgian ligne claire tradition while maintaining a distinct, contemporary sensibility. Upon its release, the collection was praised by critics for its narrative economy and the nuanced way it balanced everyday life against the backdrop of societal tension.
