Jean Jacques Boissard, Ovids Metamorphosen 1556

This 2005 publication from Gebr. Mann serves as a scholarly facsimile edition of Jean Jacques Boissard’s work on Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Originally conceptualized in the late 16th century, Boissard’s project sought to interpret the classical mythological narratives through the lens of Renaissance humanism. The original engravings associated with his interpretations were crafted to bridge the gap between ancient storytelling and the visual sensibilities of the sixteenth-century elite.

The 2005 edition was produced to provide researchers and art historians with a high-quality, accessible reference for Boissard’s classical scholarship. By focusing on the meticulous reproduction of original plates and contextual commentary, the publisher aimed to preserve the artistic integrity of the work for a modern audience. The reception of this volume has been largely academic, valued for its utility in studies of early modern iconology and the reception of Ovidian texts.
