Jenny Saville

Published in 2018 by Rizzoli, this monograph serves as a comprehensive survey of the career of Jenny Saville, the British contemporary painter renowned for her large-scale depictions of the human figure. Richard Calvocoressi, a noted art historian and curator, provides the scholarly framework for the volume, contextualizing Saville’s visceral, textured approach to portraiture within the lineage of both modernism and classical tradition. The book functions as a vital record of her evolution from her rise as part of the Young British Artists movement in the 1990s to her mature works.

The publication was designed to reflect the tactile quality of Saville's canvases, featuring high-fidelity reproductions that highlight her signature impasto technique and palette. By assembling a wide range of her work in a single reference, the monograph aims to bridge the gap between her public profile and the intimate, often confrontational nature of her subjects. It has been received as an essential reference for students of contemporary painting, praised for its clear-eyed analysis of how Saville challenges conventional perceptions of flesh, anatomy, and historical painting genres.
