Johannesevangelium und Johannesbriefe

Published in 1992 by Walter de Gruyter, this volume represents a significant contribution to the scholarly tradition of New Testament exegesis. Walter Schmithals, a prominent German theologian known for his work in historical criticism and the analysis of Gnostic influences on early Christianity, authored this text as part of a series intended for academic theological study. The work situates the Johannine writings within their complex historical and social environments, reflecting the rigorous methodology characteristic of late 20th-century German academic biblical scholarship.

The design and editorial presentation of the book adhere to the austere, functional aesthetic established by the de Gruyter publishing house, which specializes in scholarly monographs. By providing a detailed commentary on the Gospel and Epistles of John, Schmithals sought to resolve persistent questions regarding the structure and origins of the Johannine corpus. The text is widely recognized in academic circles for its methodical clarity and remains a foundational reference for students and scholars engaged in advanced linguistic and theological examination of the Johannine literature.
