Where it came from
Jolly Old Saint Nicholas, published by Dutton Children's Books in 1998, represents a festive entry in the tradition of illustrated holiday books for younger children. The project centers on the visual interpretation of the classic Christmas figure, aiming to evoke a sense of nostalgic warmth and classic folklore. By leveraging the established visual language of the season, the book seeks to provide a gentle, atmospheric introduction to the character for early readers.
The illustrations provided by Tom Newsom reflect his background in classic American figurative art. Newsom, known for his work appearing in various publications and his attention to realistic textures and lighting, brought a painterly quality to the page layouts. The book was designed to function as an heirloom-style keepsake, utilizing rich color palettes and soft edges to capture the serene, magical tone often associated with mid-century holiday depictions.
