Jolly Roger

Jolly Roger is a quintessential example of Colin McNaughton's distinct approach to children's literature, emerging during a period in the early 1990s when his work was gaining significant recognition for its subversive humor and kinetic illustration style. Published by Candlewick Press, this picture book reflects McNaughton's commitment to creating stories that bridge the gap between slapstick comedy and genuine childhood curiosity, often utilizing a bright, cartoonish aesthetic that appealed to young readers.

McNaughton, a prolific author and illustrator, designed the work to subvert traditional pirate tropes, grounding the narrative in the relatable, messy experiences of childhood rather than historical adventure. The book received acclaim for its playful tone and its ability to engage reluctant readers, solidifying McNaughton's reputation as a key figure in British children's publishing whose artistic style defined the look of many nursery and primary school bookshelves throughout the decade.
