Jon van Zyle's Alaska sketchbook

Jon Van Zyle is a renowned Alaskan artist celebrated for his lifelong connection to the state's wilderness and its iconic sled dog culture. Published by Epicenter Press in 1998, this sketchbook serves as a intimate window into his creative process, offering a compilation of preliminary drawings, field notes, and visual reflections that capture the rugged landscapes and animal studies central to his career. The book was produced to highlight the spontaneous, raw nature of his observations, providing fans and collectors a rare glimpse into the preliminary stages of his finished oil paintings and prints.

The design of the sketchbook emphasizes accessibility and the feel of an artist's personal ledger, featuring a mix of graphite sketches and watercolor washes that define Van Zyle's signature style. As a two-time Iditarod finisher, Van Zyle’s work is deeply informed by his firsthand experiences on the trail, and this collection was received as an essential companion for those interested in the authentic, untamed spirit of Alaska. It remains a hallmark of his collaboration with Epicenter Press, reflecting his dedication to preserving the visual narrative of the Last Frontier through consistent and evocative documentation.
