Korrespondenz zwischen Heinrich Schliemann und Rudolf Virchow

This volume compiles the extensive correspondence between the pioneering archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann and the polymath Rudolf Virchow, documenting a professional and personal relationship that spanned the late 19th century. Published in 1990 by Akademie Verlag, now part of the Wiley-VCH group, the collection serves as a primary source for understanding the development of modern archaeology and the scientific debates regarding Schliemann's excavations at Troy and Tiryns.

The publication was part of a scholarly effort to contextualize Schliemann’s ambitious, often controversial methodology through the lens of his exchanges with Virchow, a scientist whose empirical rigor acted as a critical sounding board for Schliemann’s theories. By archiving these letters, historians gain insight into the intersection of amateur exploration and institutional science during an era of significant shifts in European academia.
