Krishna the cowherd; or, A study of the childhood of Shrî Krishna ...

Published in 1917 by the Theosophical Publishing House, Krishna the cowherd reflects the deep engagement of the Theosophical Society with Indian spirituality and religious mythology during the early twentieth century. Mohini Mohan Dhar sought to compile and present the traditional narratives surrounding the childhood of Krishna, framing these classical stories within a structure accessible to an English-speaking audience interested in comparative religion and Eastern mysticism.

The work emerged from the intellectual climate of Adyar, Chennai, where the Theosophical Society promoted a synthesis of Western esoteric thought and Vedic traditions. Dhar's interpretation was intended to serve both as a devotional text and a scholarly exploration, characterizing Krishna not merely as a mythological figure but as a vital manifestation of divine consciousness. The book remains a notable example of the era's cross-cultural literary efforts to bring Hindu scripture to the global stage.
