La chanson de Roland

La Chanson de Roland, the oldest surviving major work of French literature, emerged as an oral epic tradition before being transcribed into the Oxford manuscript in the 12th century. This specific 1887 edition, published by Mame in Tours, represents the 19th-century fascination with medievalism, a period when scholars and publishers sought to codify and romanticize the foundational myths of the French nation for educational and cultural preservation.

The design of this edition reflects the stylistic sensibilities of the late 19th-century French publishing house Mame, which was renowned for its high-quality liturgical and classical typography. By commissioning illustrations that aimed to evoke the gravity of the Carolingian era, the publisher intended to bridge the gap between ancient heroic poetry and the refined aesthetic expectations of the contemporary reader. The book serves as a primary example of how the canonized classics were presented to the French bourgeoisie during the Third Republic.
