La conquête du pain

La conquête du pain, or The Conquest of Bread, was originally serialized in the anarchist journal Le Révolté before being published in book form in 1892. Peter Kropotkin, a Russian prince turned anarchist philosopher, authored the work as a constructive critique of existing economic systems, proposing a decentralized society built upon mutual aid and the voluntary redistribution of resources. Its publication solidified Kropotkin’s reputation as the foremost theoretician of anarcho-communism.

The text was designed to be accessible to a wide audience, reflecting Kropotkin's belief that political theory should be grounded in the lived experiences of working people. Throughout the twentieth century, editions published by Freedom Press helped maintain the book’s influence within radical political movements. It is widely considered one of the most significant anarchist texts ever written, though its reception has consistently divided critics between those who view it as a utopian manifesto and those who dismiss its economic feasibility.
