Le ballon rouge

Le ballon rouge originated as an acclaimed 1956 short film written and directed by Albert Lamorisse, capturing a poetic vision of post-war Paris through the lens of a young boy and his sentient balloon. Following the film's international success and Academy Award win, Lamorisse adapted the story into a beloved photographic picture book, using stills from the production to anchor the narrative in a tangible, dreamlike reality.

This particular edition, published by L'école des loisirs in 1976, serves as a classic vehicle for Lamorisse’s minimalist, visual storytelling style. The design emphasizes the stark contrast between the vibrant red balloon and the muted, gray tones of the Parisian streets, a stylistic choice intended to evoke a sense of childhood wonder amidst the austerity of the era. It has since become a staple of French children's literature, valued for its ability to convey profound emotion through limited text and evocative imagery.
