Where it came from
Le Grand Meaulnes was the only novel completed by Alain-Fournier before his death during the First World War in 1914. First published in 1913 by Éditions Émile-Paul, the story emerged from the author's deeply personal memories of a chance encounter in 1905, which he transmuted into a nostalgic, dreamlike exploration of lost adolescence and the search for an unreachable ideal.
The novel's aesthetic is characterized by its symbolist undertones and its unique balance between grounded realism and romantic mystery. Upon its release, it was narrowly beaten for the Prix Goncourt, yet it quickly secured a reputation as a masterpiece of French literature, celebrated for its haunting atmosphere and its poignant depiction of the transition from childhood innocence to the complexities of adulthood.
